There are a number of factors which determine whether huntingfor a particular animal is illegal:

Can you hunt animals?
Yes. People always hunt animals. I do not however find the fun in killing a helpless animal so please do not hunt!
For cat owners, it’s not hard to imagine that the deadliest hunter on Earth has four paws and whiskers. Especially if your moggy likes to bring you ‘gifts’. Certainly, a little birdy is likely to agree: The Mammal Society have estimated that the UK’s 9 million pet cats could bring home 92 million dead animals per year, 27 million of them birds.
Scale that killing potential up to tiger or leopard size and you’d have the world’s most successful predator – or would you?
Big cats are undoubtedly finely-honed hunters. They are apex predators with fearsome claws and powerful jaws. Tigers are strong swimmers and leopards are excellent climbers, so they can cover a variety of landscapes during a hunt.
To remain undetected they hunt under cover of darkness
Yet in Kruger National Park, South Africa, six out of seven leopard hunts end in disappointment. Tigers hit their target even less often. George Schaller’s studies of Bengal tigers estimated that as few as one in 20 hunts actually results in a kill.
These estimates were made from observations and obviously vary significantly depending on how much prey is available and the experience of the predator. Their sneaky nature also makes hunting behaviour notoriously difficult to study.
Even with their renowned camouflage, it can be difficult for these big cats to hide so they rely on the element of surprise to catch their prey. They are stealthy hunters, stalking and ambushing their targets and using the landscape for concealment. To remain undetected they hunt under cover of darkness but can fall foul of the full moon.
Out on the plains, cheetahs obviously have an advantage in the chase since they are capable of running at 58mph (93km/h). But even they only catch their prey half the time.
Looking at the royalty of roaring cats, it seems teamwork can help. Lionesses hunting in a group or pair can be twice as successful as a lone animal but still succeed less than 30% of the time.
They only hunt once or twice a day and whatever they catch is shared
Hunting as a group pays off better for wild canines. African wild dogs for example increase their success rate to 67% in a pack of 20 dogs. They can target animals twice their size and sometimes even bigger.
Similarly, grey wolves can take down enormous American bison weighing up to 900kg. They achieve this through efficient cooperation, running a relay race that eventually exhausts their prey so they can strike.
However, all that running takes it out of the dogs. They only hunt once or twice a day and whatever they catch is shared.
For a really impressive daily death tally, you have to set your sights on a much smaller animal – the army ant.
This hunter also gets by with a little help from its friends. A single colony of army ants can capture up to 30,000 prey items in just one day. But the numbers are key: a colony can number half a million ants.
It’s the dragonfly brain that holds the secret to this remarkable success rate
The insect world is home to reportedly the most successful hunter on Earth. In 2012 researchers at Harvard University, Massachusetts, US, found that dragonflies caught up to 95% of the prey they chased.
This deadly record is down to an array of adaptations including complex eyes specialised to detect black spots against the sky. Their wings are also powered by individual muscles that work together for amazing acceleration and agility.
For neuroscientist Anthony Leonardo, it’s the dragonfly brain that holds the secret to this remarkable success rate.
“The brain uses a highly optimised hunting strategy that allows the dragonfly to predict where the prey is going and the appropriate muscle commands to intercept it,” he explains.
“Dragonflies are opportunistic and will consume any flying prey roughly the size of their head or smaller – bees, moths, flies. Mostly they eat small insects like mosquitoes [and] midges - but larger species will even catch other dragonflies.”
The whales consume as much as 4 tonnes of food a day
“In my lab, where we feed them exclusively fruit flies – more difficult to capture than common outdoor prey – they catch about 80%.. This is still quite impressive as the fruit flies are moving quite fast, about 1 metre per second.”
In Leonardo’s lab at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Maryland, US, researchers have taken on a tremendously fiddly task to study the insects in flight. They have fitted tiny backpacks to dragonflies.
“We are using the telemetry backpacks to record from both steering neurons and wing motor neurons while the dragonfly catches prey,” says Leonardo.
“The purpose of these studies is to understand how brain cells work together to model the world and make predictions… about prey movement and desired steering commands.”
There is one more contender for the title of most successful hunter. But to many of us, it does not seem to be a real hunter at all.
Blue whales are the largest mammals ever known and can reach up to 34m (111ft), almost as long as a jumbo jet.
Taking down a massive target certainly looks dramatic
To maintain their impressively massive figures, the whales consume as much as 4 tonnes of food a day. Their preferred diet is small crustaceans known as krill. To hit its calorific target, a single blue whale eats 40 million krill per day.
If you think opening wide to slurp down some seafood doesn’t exactly count as hunting you underestimate the marine mammals. The energy it takes to open their huge jaws means they will only do so in the presence of a significant swarm of krill. In the summer months blue whales search the ocean for scattered riches that will see them through the bleak winter.
So choosing the world’s deadliest hunter all depends on your interpretation of deadly. Taking down a massive target certainly looks dramatic. Picking off prey with a superb success rate can’t fail to impress. From our perspective consuming millions of lifeforms in a single gulp is another level of lethal, but to a whale it’s just dinner.
For all of these wild hunters it’s survival that motivates their predatory behaviour. Domestic cats are fed and cared for, so it’s only residual instinct that drives their killer urges. Of course, humans judging cats for taking innocent lives does sound a bit like the pot calling the kitten black.
Taking down all of the Red Dead Redemption 2 legendary animals is the only way to become a top hunter in the Red Dead Redemption 2 wilderness. There's never a dull moment in Arthur Morgan's story, and thanks to the huge number of side missions and activities available outside of the main plot, there are plenty of different paths you can follow. One you'll encounter early on is the option to chase down all the Red Dead Redemption 2 legendary animals.
You'll find 16 of these magnificent beasts in total, distributed across the length and breadth of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map, and if you want to hunt them and collect all their trinkets then you'll need to know exactly where to look and what tactics to patiently apply. Our Red Dead Redemption 2 legendary animals guide will provide all the details of where to locate these creatures, as well as some handy tips for besting the beasts.
Spoiler warning: Three of the legendary animals are in an area of the map that is a huge spoiler itself. There will be a spoiler warning before we detail these locations. You can also watch a walkthrough of the legendary animal hunts in our video below:
1. Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear
Location: Grizzlies East, Ambarino
This utter unit is a damned sight more homicidal than your average bear. You first encounter it in Chapter Two, while hunting with Hosea during the “Exit Pursued By a Bruised Ego” mission. As you’ll probably only have a pistol and bow when starting said mission, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to kill the bear. Worry not. Just return to its hunting spot north of O’creah’s Run in Grizzlies East a few hours later when you’ve got the likes of the Springfield or Rolling Block Rifle in Arthur’s arsenal, and a few well placed shots of Express ammo to the heart will floor the brute.
2. Legendary Buck
Location: Big Valley, West Elizabeth
The buck hangs out in the wilting forests of Big Valley, which you can find a short ride northwest from the town of Strawberry. A Rolling Block Rifle loaded with Express ammo should take this noble animal down with just a single shot to the heart.
3. Bighorn Ram
Location: Cattail Pond, New Hanover
The sizable sheep graces to the east of Cattail Pond, located a short ride from Valentine. Like most of the other legendary critters on this list, a rifle will kill the ram with the least fuss possible. We put ours in the ground with a heart shot, then a second round to the head.
4. Legendary White Bison
Location: Lake Isabella, Ambarino
This beefy customer resides in the chilly climes of Lake Isabella, to the north of Grizzlies West. Make sure you dress in warm clothes before travelling to the frigid region, or Arthur’s health will start to drain more rapidly. The bison’s clue trail usually spawns on the slopes near the frozen lake. A high-powered rifle is the only way to go with such a burly piece of prey.
5. Legendary Wolf
Location: Cotorra Springs, Ambarino
You really can’t miss this wolf’s hunting spot. The graceful predator can be found among the geysers of Cotorra Springs, southwest of the Wapiti Indian camp. Thanks to the beast’s close proximity to the reservation, it’s likely you’ll stumble upon the springs while completing one of Rains Fall’s story missions. A single shot to the heart with the Springfield Rifle should put wolfie down in one.
6. Legendary Moose
Location: Roanoke Ridge, Ambarino
Built more like a giraffe than a moose, this colossal heribove demands a powerful weapon. We suggest using the Carcano Rifle if you want to take the moose down in as few shots as possible. You’ll find the moose near a wooded lake near Roanoke Ridge. It’s surprisingly swift for such a massive critter, so make sure to use Dead Eye and aim for the heart and neck.
7. Legendary Beaver
Location: Butcher Creek, Lemoyne
You can kill this upsettingly cute albino beaver with one good shot from the Varmint Rifle. Predictably, it can be found near a small dam on the riverbanks near Butcher Creek, which lies just west of the Van Horn Trading Post. Killing the adorable critter is bad enough, so at least be semi-humane and use the aforementioned bunny-butchering gun, or a bow.
8. Legendary Boar
Location: Blue Water Marsh, Lemoyne
Pumbaa’s seriously cranky pal can be found in the marshlands north of Lagras, in the Lemoyne region of the map. The beast will happily gore you on sight, so make sure to take a weapon with a fair bit of fire power. A bow with poisoned arrows or the Springfield Rifle are both good candidates for the oinker-skewering job.
9. Legendary Coyote
Location: Old Greenbank Mill, New Hanover
Aside from the panther – more on the infuriatingly reclusive big cat in a bit – there’s no legendary animal we had more trouble getting to spawn than this coyote. You can find this skittish predator in the hills of Scarlett Meadows. Should you spook it, the beast will show off its Roadrunner-shaming sprint, so make sure you put it down with a single clean shot using the Springfield Rifle.
10. Legendary Fox
Location: Mattock Pond, Lemoyne
Make this foxy customer less than fantastic by filling it full of lead from the Varmint Rifle. You can find the fox near Mattock Pond, which lies just north of the town of Rhodes. Try to get the jump on it, because if the sneaky customer eludes your first shot and scurries into the bushes, it can be really difficult to catch up with.
It was a pain to do it manually. Some very important notes:-You can't edit the level of a character still in the tutorial. Fallout new vegas inventory editor.
11. Legendary Elk
Location: Bacchus Station, Cumberland Forest
The gorgeous grazer can be found just east out Bacchus Station, in the Cumberland Forest region. Once you track its first couple of clues, you’ll have no trouble spotting the herbivore thanks to its blisteringly white coat. A Springfield Rifle loaded with Express or High Velocity ammo should take the animal down in two or three shots provided you aim for its vitals.
12. Legendary Bullgator
Location: Lakay, Bayou Nwa
The bullgator is an utter b**tard. More dinosaur than gator, this gargantuan swamp menace can be found in Bayou Nwa, west of Lakay and just a few minutes ride north from Saint Denis. To get the creature to show, you first must complete the Chapter 4 story mission “Country Pursuits”. The bullgator is the strongest animal in the game, so we advise sniping it from a distance using the Rolling Block Rifle. Just be warned the monster will charge you… and it’s terrifyingly quick.
Warning, the last four Red Dead Redemption 2 Legendary Animals are either found in absolute spoiler territories, or are the most elusive beasts in the game. So only scroll on if you've revealed the entirety of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map, or don't mind the spoilers.
Ready? Okay, you have been warned.
13. Legendary Cougar
Location: Gaptooth Ridge, New Austin
This furry fiend can be found on the prowl near Gaptooth Ridge, a little west of Tumbleweed in New Austin. Once you make it spawn by tracking its various fur remains and paw marks, stay alert; the cougar is extremely difficult to hit outside of Dead Eye mode, and if you’re all out of slow-mo sauce, you can expect a swift mauling. While you should really use a rifle for a clean kill, we’d also take a semi-auto shotgun, just in case you find yourself within nibbling range of the big cat.
14. Legendary Pronghorn
Location: Rio Del Lobo Rock, New Austin
You can find this antelope hybrid near Rio Del Lobo Rock in the Rio Bravo region. Annoyingly, our one was rather too fond of life, escaping from us several times. To give yourself the best chance of a clean kill, use a scent remover so it doesn't sniff Arthur out as the outlaw approaches. A clean and true strike with the bow should put the animal down with a single arrow.
15. Legendary Takana Bison
Location: Mantea Falls, New Austin
This serious slab of beef grazes to the northwest of Manteca Falls in New Austin. We found our bison to be surprisingly docile, and it barely batted an eye in our Arthur’s presence… well, until we started shooting the poor beast in the face with our trusty Springfield Rifle. Four rounds of Express ammo should be enough to get the job done.
16. Legendary Giaguaro Panther
Location: Bolber Blade, Lemoyne
The most elusive legendary animal in the game, and the one you’re going to have to invest most time into before you can proudly take its pelt to the trapper in Saint Denis. This stealthy cat only spawns once you reach rank 9 of the Red Dead Redemption 2 Master Hunter Challenges, whereby you can find it prowling to the west of Shady Belle in Lemoyne, not too far from a certain New Orleans-inspired city. Take a rifle and shotgun just to be sure kitty doesn’t get murderously overfamiliar. Once the panther has been put down, treat yourself to a glass of XX whisky to celebrate the fact Morgan has successfully hunted RDR2’s 16 most incredible critters.

Animals To Hunt In Africa
There are several different ways to help support your community and yourself in Red Dead Redemption 2. This includes robbing stores, completing odd jobs, or collecting bounties for the local sheriff. The most reliable ways to keep everyone happy, though, is to hunt in the wilderness. Animals ranging from the tiniest raccoons to the largest bears are available to hunt, but hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t about just killing the animal. You have to use the proper method for killing each target and properly use the corpse once you’re done. These are the Red Dead Redemption 2 hunting tips you need to know.
Check out our fast travel guide, beginner’s guide, cheat code guide, fishing guide, and horses guide for more help with Red Dead Redemption 2.
Tracking your target
Before you kill an animal, you obviously need to find one to kill. If you don’t have a particular target in mind, the easiest way to do this is to simply venture away from town and start exploring the world in front of you, but if you need a specific animal, open up your map. Here, you’ll see icons representing different animals. If one pops up on the map, you’ll find it there more frequently.
Head to your desired location and begin searching. If the animal doesn’t appear right away, you have a few options. First, you can click on the analog sticks to activate Eagle Eye, which will show the paths of nearby animals.
You can also try crafting bait. This can be done by creating a camp and opening the crafting menu, though you have to have specific herbs and meats on hand in order for it to work. There are a few different types of bait, one for predators and one for herbivores, and you can unlock more potent versions of these.
Once animals are in sight, it’s time to study them. Look at one of the animals – you can use binoculars if they’re far away – and then look in the bottom-right corner of the screen to see their rating. One dot represents a poor-quality animal, while three represents a high-quality animal. Use this information to determine which one you kill.
Choosing the right weapon, getting the perfect pelt/skin/hide
Depending on the size of the animal you’re hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll have to use the appropriate weapon for your kill-shot. Failure to do this will result in a more difficult kill and a pelt too damaged to fetch much of a price from anyone, but it’s no sweat once you get the hang of it.
For smaller animals like foxes, you want to use a bow. One arrow should be enough to take down almost any of these animals, but make sure you get pretty close before firing your shot. Especially early on, your stamina will be very low, and this means your shot will start wobbling after just a few seconds. Even smaller animals like raccoons necessitate the use of a varmint rifle, instead. For the very smallest animals, you will want to use small game arrows, which can be crafted with standard arrows.
For larger animals like deer, you’ll want to make use of a rifle like the Springfield or the Rolling Block. These are capable of taking out most mammals with a single shot to the head, and you’ll still end up with a perfect pelt if you hit them in the head. Repeaters can be used instead, but they are less accurate at range, and you should only be taking one shot, anyway.
Even bigger animals dubbed “massive animals” can be taken down with carefully-placed shots from sniper rifles and even shotguns, if you’re using slug rounds.
The one exception to this rule is for “legendary” animals. They’re located across the map and will occasionally be the subject of a mission, and you don’t have to worry about damaging their skin. Blast away with your weapon of choice, including shotguns with normal ammunition. Standard bolt-action rifles will also work, but you have to hit a critical organ.
If you have any doubt about the weapon you should use for an animal, check your compendium. As long as you have studied the animal already, the suggested weapon for killing it will be listed.
Killing your target
Much like animals in real life, if a creature happens to see you running toward it at full speed in Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s going to bolt, and it’ll bring its friends with it. You need to get the jump on the animals you hunt by sneaking up on them, and there are a few things you can do to make this easier.
Firstly, as you’re entering a region that you believe to have animals in it, leave your horse several yards away. The horse’s footsteps can scare animals even more quickly than yours, but you want the horse to still be close enough to help with transporting the carcass away later.
Once you’re off the horse, click in the left analog stick to make Arthur crouch. This will force him to sneak and move more quietly, allowing you to get closer to your target before taking out your weapon.
After you’re in position, it’s time to take your shot. Pick the target you wish to kill – more on that below – and pull out your weapon. Aim for the head, and take your time lining up the perfect shot. If you’re having trouble getting the animal to put its head up, hit the square button on PS4 or X button on Xbox One to call out to them. This will give you a very limited window to take the shot before they lose interest.
Transporting the carcass
Once the animal is dead, it’s time to make use of its carcass. There are a few different ways you can do this, depending on what you’re using it for. If you plan on donating the whole animal to your camp, you can, for most animals, simply stow it away on your horse and be on your way. Multiple animals can be stored on a horse, though only one “big” animal like a deer can fit on the back. Smaller animals like raccoons can be stored on the side at the same time.
If you’re making use of the skin or need the meat, you can skin the animal right away. Walk over to it and hit the triangle or Y button to skin it and take several pieces of raw meat. The skin must be stored on your horse, but you can then pick up the skinned carcass and place it on top of the skin to transport back to your camp.
Certain larger animals, such as alligators, cannot actually be transported from the point of death. If Arthur rolls an animal’s skin up and sticks it on his horse, rather than draping it over the top, it means the animal is too large to be stowed.
While taking your carcass to its final destination, know that it isn’t glued to your horse. If something happens that sends Arthur flying off the horse, everything on the horse will go with it and you’ll need to pick it up again. Make sure you do to avoid a wasted trip.
Additionally, don’t hesitate in getting your carcass to its destination. They spoil quite quickly, and if you fail to act in time, you’ll be left with a useless rotten corpse. This can occur regardless of whether or not it has been skinned yet.
Making use of the animal
There are a few different things you can do with the various components an animal provides, if you choose to skin it rather than donate the entire carcass to your camp.
The first thing you should do once you’ve skinned the animal is cook the meat. Make up a campfire like you would to craft bait, select the crafting option for the relevant meat, and cook up all the pieces you have in your inventory. Holding down the X or A button will make this process quicker, and you can then choose whether to eat the meat immediately or store it.
You have a few different options for what to do with the carcass aside from eating the meat. You can transport the skinned carcass and the meat back to Pearson at your camp and donate all or some of it. If you donate the skins here, they can then be used later for crafting different upgrades for your satchels or around the camp.
Pelts can also be sold to trappers scattered across the map. They’re visible with a large paw print symbol and will pay you for your pelts. This isn’t a great way to make money in many cases, as basic animals will only get you a few dollars.
If you find yourself in possession of an animal trophy, such as a paw, you can sell it to a fence. These vendors purchase illegally-obtained items, and if you don’t want to see the item, you can also turn it into a trinket at the fence as well.
