1 year agoI'm sure most of you have heard or read on the internet of the issue surrounding the Custom Color setting from the Nvidia Control Panel.
I found an easy solution. I must add, though, that this solution only fixes (and keeps) your custom color settings while on the desktop but they get reset when running full-screen applications like games. For this, you can switch to borderless window and the desktop color configuration will kick in. Alright, here it is.
- Press Start and type Color Management.
- A new window will open up which has your monitors listed on the top. Choose the monitor you will be using for calibration
- Under the monitor list, UNTICK the 'Use my settings for this device'. Also REMOVE any profiles listed under 'Profiles Associated with this device'
- Next, Switch to the 'Advanced' Tab. At the bottom of the Tab, click 'Change System Defaults.'
- A new window pops up similar to the previous one. Again, REMOVE any color profiles listed as done in previous step and then click the 'Advanced' Tab.
- Now, this is the most important step. UNTICK the 'Use Windows Display Calibration' and click close on both the similar looking windows.
- Once all that is done step by step, you can go ahead change your color calibration under Nvidia Control Panel like you normally would and hit Apply. Once your custom setting is applied, this will stick no matter what and only be controlled by the Nvidia Control Panel as opposed to Windows Try resetting your PC and see that this setting will work every time you log on. Profit

6. f.lux
f.lux is a very similar tool in its function as RedShift GUI which is to adjust the color temperature of your screen depending on the time of day and light condition of the local environment. Your location can be retrieved from a webpage on the f.lux website which can then be entered into the program. The only options are the transition speed between temperatures and the temperature selection itself for day and night. The program can be disabled for an hour if you want the proper color range for a period of time.

7. Dimmer
Dimmer is a plain, simple and tiny utility of around 50K that will lower the brightness of the desktop whenever you launch it. Run the portable executable and the display will immediately dim. Right clicking on the tray icon will offer the chance to configure the amount to reduce the brightness by, ranging from the minimum of 5% up to the almost completely black 95%. A slight downside is the taskbar, Start menu and right click context menus don’t reduce brightness to match the desktop. Requires .NET 1.1 or above.
Download Dimmer
8. FriendEye
FriendEye as a program has been abandoned by its developer, but is still a useful tool which will allow you to quickly lower the brightness of the screen by a click of the icon in the tray. Launch the portable executable and right click the tray icon to configure the amount to dim the screen by entering a percentage into the box. There’s also an option to add a black/grey, sepia or green tint to the dimming color. The brightness reduction effect is very smooth and you simply click the tray icon to turn it on and immediately lower the brightness, clicking again will restore to the original level.

9. Monitor Bright
Monitor Bright is a portable tool very much along the lines of the Dimmer utility above, but has the ability to use a color tint for your screen brightness adjustments. This can be any color you choose from a standard RGB palette and has a useful side effect. Select plain black and it will simply reduce the brightness by the percentage you set in the right click tray menu, selecting white will actually increase the standard brightness if for some reason your current display isn’t bright enough. It does also suffer the same slight issue of the taskbar, start menu etc not following the brightness setting of the desktop. Requires the .NET Framework 2 or above.

10. Changing Brightness Using the Built-in Video Driver
If you have one of the popular video adapters from the likes of nVidia, AMD or Intel, you will have the ability to change settings such as brightness, contrast, gamma and other related settings from within the driver’s own configuration window. If you just want to make a fine adjustment and leave it, this could be all you need.
For nVidia Graphics Adapters
1. Right click on the Desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
2. Click on “Adjust desktop color settings” in the display tree on the left hand side navigation bar.
3. Choose the display if you have more than one, and then select “Use NVIDIA settings”, you can now move the slider for Brightness, Gamma and Contrast. Click Apply once you’re finished.

Soldiers naturally spawned in this way will continually spawn and despawn over time, similar to other mobs. Lord of the rings wiki. The soldiers in the fortresses do not despawn.
For AMD Displays
AMD/ATI video drivers also have the ability to alter brightness, contrast and gamma settings for the display, although access to the settings pane for these values can differ between driver versions. For example, the Catalyst legacy driver 10.2 which works for all older ATI adapters (pictured below) has a Color entry down the left to enable the brightness adjustments. All you need to do is right click on the desktop and select “Catalyst Control Center” from the context menu.
For Intel Displays
1. The Intel driver brightness settings are easy to get to, right click on the desktop and select “Graphics Properties…”, or find the Intel driver option in Control Panel.
2. Click on “Color Correction” down the left and adjust your settings for gamma, brightness and contrast. For our laptop display in the screenshot, the Gamma was already at the minimum setting as default which would mean we can’t reduce it further via the driver settings window. Click Apply or OK when done.

You see that “Use NVidia settings” option?
For some weird reason (after a Windows/Driver update, I don’t know for sure), after restarting my PC it reverts back to default “other apps control…” setting, is pretty annoying.

I downloaded the 4#Gamma Panel, and created a basic task on Task Scheduler that auto-run this program when Windows boot.
It works perfectly! Thanks!

Wow curse client download. And for the vast majority of them there are mods and add-ons available to improve the gaming experience. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of online games available at the moment.
(I would still like to know if anyone has ever had a similar problem, though).
ReplyPlease try the program to change the brightness of the entire video-system “MyMonic v1.1” very comfortable

Battery endurance is still an issue, however I can at least work in the evening using the dimmer.

You’re a genius. I have been trying to get my monitor to where I could see the text on the screen for days. Your information solved my problem.
Reply1. Desktop Lighter – adjusts GAMMA, not BRIGHTNESS. Has no effect on the display backlight. And the settings are not retained after waking from sleep mode.
2. iBrightness Tray – download link has been broken for over 3 years.
3. Redshift – Adjusts COLOR TEMPERATURE; makes no claim to affect BRIGHTNESS.
4. Gamma panel – adjusts the amount of light which the liquid crystals in the display panel will transmit. Has no effect on display backlight.
5. Screenbright – Works, but download link has been broken for a number of years
6. f.lux – adjusts color temperature; makes no claim to affect brightness
7. Dimmer – adjusts liquid crystal OPACITY, not backlight BRIGHTNESS
(version 2.0 has been “coming soon” for over 5 years)
8. Friendeye – adjust the COLOR, not BRIGHTNESS (has no effect on display backlight)
9. Monitor Bright – changes COLOR, not BRIGHTNESS (has no effect on display backlight)
10. Built in video driver – some have no effect on display backlight, use a watt meter to verify changes in energy usage
___________
Just to recap, the following apps DO control the backlight
– ClickMonitorDDC (with hotkey support)
– Screenbright

Replythanks mike you saved my time :)
ReplyDoes anyone know of a Windows program that can change the black level / brightness of a particular display in an extremely fine-grained way? For example, by inputting a decimal/floating point scaling factor? These slider bars do not give me the resolution I need for my particular application.
ReplyYou may try Free Monitor Manager. But you’ll have to adjust the settings in its data files manually. It’s easy, btw.
ReplyGamma Panel ‘Contrast’ adjustment did not do much for me, however lowering the Gamma setting worked great! I’m using Win 10 on an Asus Laptop.
ReplyOne yet utility similar to ScreenBright: Free Monitor Manager.
It supports multi-monitor configurations and allows to change monitor settings using global hotkeys.

I tried a bunch of these and found that only iBrightnessTray works on my Thinkpad W520. It’s great to have that when the built-in hotkeys for screen brightness control stop working.
ReplyHow can you put f.lux in 6th position? It wipes its ass with all screen dimming softwares I’ve used. The Desktop lighter was pissing me off the most.
ReplyThis isn’t a “top 10”.
ReplyI found a tool similiar to screenbright, but more easy to use:
ClickMonitorDDC is a portable freeware tool to adjust brightness or contrast of a DDC compatible monitor by simply clicking a dynamic notification icon in the taskbar tray area, also supports shortcut icon command-line arguments

Excellent topic. I’ve been searching for something like this for a while.
But no-one seems to have observed that there are two very different ways of achieving this. Most of the above work by lowering the image brightness. What is needed if you want to save power and maximise the life of your backlight is to lower the backlight power. So far, the only free one I have found that does this is iBrightness Tray. Working that way also gives a much better brightness range.
ReplyThanks Ray, GammaPanel works in my laptop. You are a star. May God Bless You
ReplyGama panel does not work with windows 7. Once you reboot your pc, all settings an hotkeys are lost and it reverts to default – rather useless.
ReplyNot sure what your problem is but Game Panel is working perfectly fine on Win 7 64-bit. Saves the profiles and hotkeys OK and they can be selected without issue on reboot. When it’s launched Game Panel reverts to the profile you used last time.
Replyexcellent idea, thnak you very much
Replythe screen of my laptop is too bright inside, even with all the settings put to the minimum.
I´m using F.lux on my desktop but it´s not possible to modify brightnes with it.
For me RedShift seems to be the best because in one software I have F.lux functionality and brightness control.

Okay so I have noticed that when I go into a game such as Resident Evil 7 full screen or Dark souls 3 and some other games into full screen mode the game will get really bright or when I exit back to desktop it will be really bright. However if I run a game in borderless windowed it will keep my current brightness settings. Now this doesn't happen to all of my games in full screen mode, but I have noticed a number of them starting to do this more.
I use the Nvidia control panel to adjust my Desktops brightness settings, usually when this happens I go into the control panel and click on and off my color settings. Apparently on the Nvida forums I'm not the only experiencing this too.
My GPU is a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1.
Is anyone else getting this too here?
